environmental sensitivity

By presenting a relatively low visual silhouette and retaining trees close to the structure, an Earth Sheltered House is ideally suited to bushland sites.

The initial excavation may be dramatic, but once the construction is completed and the soil mounds and roof cover are planted, the overall effect is one of blending into the environment.

Most councils now encourage the planting of species native to the area to augment the existing vegetation.

Because the soil covering of the Earth Sheltered House is usually planted with ground covers and other shrubs, the final aesthetic is dependant on the choice of vegetation and level of attention given to it.

It is usual for the parapets to have a “fringe” of ground cover plants, that varies in colour and length depending on the time of year.

The old adage that it’s only a week between a good haircut and a bad one was never truer!

I have usually followed the principal of keeping the visible part of the house relatively clean and simple, leaving the vegetation to soften and blend the final form.
